London Mayor Boris Johnson has praised Hong Kong and China for their plans for the mega-airports, which are opening soon. Unfortunately though, Boris also criticised the UK, as he feels that they will miss out on such impressive airports if things do not change.

Johnson explained, "It is hugely impressive yet also devastatingly depressing when you consider that, as long as the vision for aviation in the UK remains steadfastly wedded to Heathrow or a make-do solution, we will not be able to access many of the mega-airports opening here or in the many other dynamic economies building new airfields around the globe."
He added, “The people of Hong Kong overcame their doubts and delivered a fantastic hub airport at Chek Lap Kok that has since turbocharged their prosperity and economic success."

One of the other issues that Boris Johnson mentioned, was the fact that these airports abroad are being designed and built by British companies, including Mott MacDonald, Foster & Partners, the architects, and structural engineers Arup. With conservationists opposed to plans to expand the likes of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, it could be some time before the UK gets to experience the treats that these new mega-airports have to offer.
