There has been a lot of talk about a National Treasure 3 movie for the past few years now and, at one time, it was even claimed that the movie would open by Christmas 2011. Clearly that did not happen but Jon Turtletaub has opened up about the movie, admitting that they could start shooting by 2016.
Turtletaub told Collider, "If you can write the script, we’ll take it! It’s so damn hard to write a great historical mystery based on fact. It’s not for lack of trying. We want to do the movie. Disney wants to do the movie. We’re just having the damnedest time, writing it. I’ll bet that within two years, we’ll be shooting that movie."
He added, "I’d say we’re about half-way there. It’s not only writing a great historical mystery, but we’ve gotta write something that has nothing to do with anything we’ve done before. The goal is to always have an original sequel, as silly as that sounds. We really want to make sure that the third one doesn’t just feel like a repeat of the first one, or one too many."
When National Treasure 3 does finally begin filming, we can be sure that Nicolas Cage will make a return in the role as Ben Gates, who he played in the previous two movies. If filming does begin before 2016, we could expect to see a National Treasure 3 movie in 2017.
