It seems that J.J. Abrams really has stirred things up with his comments about wanting to see homosexual characters in the Star Wars universe in future films. While J.J. was just saying the comment in passing, pointing to future characters we have yet to see in the franchise, a lot of people have taken it upon themselves to suggest which characters already in the Star Wars movies could be gay.
Well, actor Mark Hamill has now addressed the situation, giving his full backing to having homosexual characters in future Star Wars films, even going as far as to suggest that Luke Skywalker could be gay. Mark insists that the sexuality of Luke Skywalker is open to interpretation and that if people feel that the iconic character could be gay, then who is anyone to say that this is wrong?
Hamill was asked about the sexuality of his legendary character, when the actor explained, "I just read online that JJ is very much open to that. In the old days you would get fan mail. But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school... I’m afraid to come out’."
He added, "They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves."
With that said, we are still hopeful of seeing Luke Skywalker's family in the new Star Wars films, including his wife Mara Jade Skywalker and their children. We guess we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for the Star Wars movie universe.
