J-Pop musical sensation Crystal Kay has recently spoken out about her limited success as a musical artist within the nation of Japan. Kay has been performing for nearly a decade and has become a huge and popular artist but she is not able to capture the heart and soul of many Japanese people. Many people within the nation of Japan are primarily traditionalists who support their own entertainers. The young and talented Kay is viewed as an outsider because of her non-traditional appearance.
This young artist has a Korean mother and an African American father. She was born in Japan and can fluently speak Japanese and English. The young lady also knows Japanese culture, its history and can definitely connect with J-Pop audiences. So why is she having such a hard time moving beyond her current level of success? The problem has to do with her heritage and look.
Crystal Kay resembles a light skin African American female with Asian features. While she is a native Japanese citizen, many members of Japanese society are not to keen on foreign looking celebrities. According to Kay, her physical appearance is seriously limiting her career as a performer.
When Kay had released some recent albums over the past few years, her appearance on the album covers showed a whitewashed artist. She was made to look like a traditional Japanese woman as opposed to showing off her natural black features. Unfortunately for Crystal her days as a J-Pop sensation in Japan are probably coming to an end. Most industry analysts claim that she should switch over to a English speaking market where women with multiracial features are more appreciated.
